Last year after taking an E-Bike Tour in Meteora, Greece, we knew we would love another bike tour, so during our May 2023 trip to Italy, we researched and decided to E-bike on Mt. Vesuvius. Mt. Vesuvius is known for erupting in 79 AD which buried the ancient city of Pompeii. It is the only active volcano in Europe that has erupted over the last 100 years. It also is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world as it has a history of violent and unpredictable eruptions which could affect so many people living in this area.

E-Bike Tour
We choose Enjoy Bike Sorrento for our e-bike tour of Mt Vesuvius. We paid for a group tour which would pick us up at our hotel, take us to the base of Mt Vesuvius, guide us on the tour, and return to our hotel. Actually, this worked very well for us and everything went smoothly. Our group consisted of Steve and I, another gentleman, and our tour guide so this was nice as well.

Riding Up Mt. Vesuvius
It took about 45 minutes to reach our starting place. Once we were parked and fitted well with our bikes and helmets, we were on our way. Our guide did a great job explaining the area, pointing out areas of volcanic flow, and keeping us safe on the fairly busy road. It was a pretty ride and so amazing to know we were riding up an active volcano.

Trekking Up to the Top
As much as I would have loved to ride the bike to the top, we were only allowed to ride to the entrance and would have to walk the rest of the way. The dirt path was easy to walk on but also steep and challenging because of the steepness.

The Crater
Once at the top we were able to view the crater from several different areas. It was quite busy as bus loads of people on tours were continuously arriving at the entrance and making their way uphill. The crater was uneventful with some steam rising up from vents in the earth. I didn’t feel any heat beneath my shoes or heat radiating from the crater but it was pretty cool to see.

The Ride Back Down
After we finished enjoying the crater and made our way back to the entrance, we hopped back on our bikes. Wow! What a fast quick ride back down the mountain. I very frequently had to slow myself with my breaks or I would not have been able to keep in control of the speed in which the bike wanted to travel! If felt exhilarating yet also a bit nerve racking! Our guide took some photos of us riding the bikes so that was fun! At the bottom, our driver drove us back to our hotel and we had the afternoon to explore!

Conclusion
All in all, an e-bike tour on Mt Vesuvius is spectacular. I would recommend it if you don’t mind sharing a busy mountain road with buses, cars, etc. I definitely recommend Enjoy Bike Sorrento. They were easy to book with and kept in contact with us before our tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable, safety oriented and fun to talk with. We enjoyed chatting with him to and from our hotel as he was a local and had a plethora of information on the area.

Another amazing post! So many wonderful experiences!
Thank you, Rick! It was a fun adventure!
Sounds like a great way to see Vesuvius!
Much better than on a tour bus!!
What a thrill, Lori! The views were amazing, and the ride sounds so fun.
It was a thrill! Thanks for stopping by!
What an adventure! I’m not the greatest at biking (nor have I attempted an e-bike), but it’s a surefire way to get around places easier. Glad you had fun!
It was a lot of fun although I didn’t like going so fast down the volcano!
