During our 2024 trip to Portugal we stayed in Carvoeiro for a few nights which gave us time to explore the Algar Seco. The Algar Seco is an area along the southern coast in the Algarve area near the town of Carvoeiro. It is known for its unique rock formations that have been created by years of erosion, sink holes, and exposer to the elements. These, over 20 million year old limestone cliffs are along the ocean and make for some fantastic views.

Location
To reach the Algar Seco area you can follow the road up and out of Carvoeiro. You will pass the Forte de Nossa Senhora de Encarnacao and you can find the boardwalk just past there. It is an easy walk and you can’t miss it.
Climbing Around
Once you arrive at the Algar Seco you will most likely see many people climbing around on the rocks and you will most likely want to join them as this is one of the big attractions along the Algarve coast of Portugal and specifically for the town of Carvoeiro.

We had a fantastic time here as climbing on rocks is something we do love to do. It is almost maze like so the Algar Seco is a bit of an adventure. Make sure you wear good shoes as the rock does get a bit slick as you definitely do not want to fall. I will never forget as I was out on the rocks, a younger gal came up to where I was standing and said, “I was scared to walk out this far but I saw you walking here and decided if you could do it at your age so could I.” I did get a chuckle out of this and wasn’t quite sure how to respond so I just said, “Thanks, glad I could help.”

Conclusion
If you are in the Carvoeiro area of Portugal, the Algar Seco is totally worth your time if you enjoy this sort of thing. Even if you do’t want to climb on the rocks, the walk along the boardwalk also offers fantastic scenic views.

Very peaceful, very beautiful! Algar Seco and its surroundings are the perfect place to get away from the crowds; looks like you had the place all to yourself that day!
It was a great spot. Actually there were a few others there, but as it was evening it wasn’t too busy. I had to wait a bit for people to move behind rocks or try some creative angles to get photos with no one in them!
This looks fun! And if it makes you feel better, I also get a lot of the “at your age” stuff. I consider it a compliment.
It was a lot of fun! Glad Iโm not the only one who hears that! My favorite is a few years back a little girl offered me her hand to help me up a step! She was so sweet it gave me such a smile and I thanked her so much. You can just see how proud she was to help the old nana out! ๐คฃ๐คฃ
What a gorgeous place!
We enjoyed it!
Sounds like a fun adventure and a great way to enjoy the coastal views.
It really was. Always fun to climb around!
This would be a fantastic place to climb about Lori, even at our age ๐I love how the young folk these days give such back handed compliments. We often walk about our neighbourhood and one afternoon passed a group of school girls…as we passed by, we heard one ask the others…Aren’t they just so cute? Happy Sunday. Allan
lol. We have heard that one too! Glad to know we are all rocking being โcuteโ! Have a great weekend!!
It looks really beautiful
It was a lot of fun!
Thank you for the rock climbing inspiration.Unfortaunately my bad right knee would not hold up well then. Maybe the kayaking you spoke about in another blog would be a nice alternative.
Kayaking was great! I understand the bad knee. I have a torn meniscus and some days are
Do you use a physical therapist? If so, how does that go?
Yes, I did. Doing great now. No surgery at this point. Not even doing steroid injections. Just doing the exercises I learned in physical therapy. I did have to quit roller blading though otherwise I am back to full activity. It took a couple of years to get here though.
harder than others
