Amoudi Bay in Santorini

Amoudi Bay

Getting to Amoudi Bay

Having hiked to Oia from Imerovigli, we knew once in Oia we wanted to visit Amoudi Bay. Amoudi Bay is located below the city of Oia. You can either walk the 250 plus steps down and back up, drive or taxi there, or take a donkey down and/or up the 250 plus steps.

The Trek Down to Amoudi Bay

We choose to take the steps during the day on our first trip to Amoudi Bay. This was an amazing way to see the caldera. We found the steps by the fortress and they were pretty straight forward and easy to find. What I loved was how scenic it was climbing down the steps to the bay. You get unique views of the fortress and windmills.

Amoudi Bay

When you arrive at Amoudi Bay, you will find tavernas and a dock. You can also walk through the Amoudi Sunset Taverna, up a cliff and to the other side and enjoy a swim and cliff jump. We choose not to do this as we had already had a big day.

The red cliffs behind the bay, along with the white buildings of Oia above, make for a dramatic backdrop.

Sunset Amoudi Taverna

It was hot on our way down so we had drinks and a bite to eat at Sunset Amoudi Taverna, which is located right along the bay. It was fun seeing the boats come in and out of the busy bay. We enjoyed some Saganaki and drinks and just relaxed before heading back up the steps. Before leaving we made reservations for the next evening to watch the sunset from the upper deck of the restaurant.

Returning Up the Steps

The 250 plus steps back up were really not that bad, other than the heat. Shortly after you start up there are a couple of guys who will rent you a donkey to carry you up, if you desire. We choose to walk. The steps themselves were easy to navigate and there were a couple of places to sit on the way up. We took it slow and were pretty proud of ourselves when we found we were back on top of the caldera.

Sunset at Amoudi Bay

The next evening we took a taxi to Amoudi Bay from our hotel in Imerovigli. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset and great food from the upper deck at Sunset Amoudi Taverna. Unfortunately, I was so into the sunset, I forgot to take photos of our food! Regardless, I did get pictures of the sunset so that was a win!!

All in all, Amoudi Bay was charming and I would consider it a must do in Santorini!

Where We Stayed

We Stayed at Astra Suites while in Santorini both this year and last. Astra Suites is the perfect location and is right in front of the Rock of Skaros. The sunsets here are beautiful and I believe the best on the island! The staff are beyond accommodating and are very helpful. The accommodations are comfortable and relaxing. The infinity pool is peaceful and the views are priceless. Plus they have the most wonderful restaurant for watching the sunset at with fantastic service and also wonderful food.
