During our 2025 trip to Folegandros Island in Greece we embarked on a rather difficult hike to the remote but lovely Livadaki Beach and the Aspropounta Lighthouse. Livadaki Beach is on the southwestern coast of Folegandros and is nestled in a cove with large cliffs rising above the water. The Aspropounta lighthouse sits high above the beach. You can reach Livadaki Beach by hiking or also by boat. It took us an hour and 15 minutes for the hike to the beach. The lighthouse was an additional 15 minute walk from the beach.
Location
The hike was around 3 km (1.86 miles). The path is well defined but it is a bit of a difficult hike at times. There is very little shade so bring plenty of water. Wear good shoes and also a hat. If you are susceptible to sun burn bring sun screen as the sun is quite intense. There is no place along this hike or at Livadaki Beach to purchase food or water.
The Hike
We started our hike after. delicious breakfast where we were staying at Lemon Tree Houses. We followed the main road of Folegandros until the turnoff for the hike Livadaki Beach. The trail was easy to to follow and started off as an easy path. We could see a church in the distance and the whitewashed walls made for a dramatic scene against the clear blue sky.
The path turned into a cobblestone walkway for a ways and we passed by what looked like an abandoned village or town. This is not on our map and I would love to know what this area was. Perhaps a farming community? The path turned back into dirt and also rough stone. As we reached the turn off to the church, I noticed the stairs and path leading to the church were well maintained. After a bit of discussion, we decided not to go up to the church as it was hot and it was still a ways to our destination.
We continued following the rough rock path towards the sea. The path was getting increasingly more difficult and careful footing was needed. The views were becoming more lovely as we progressed. We could see the gorgeous blue of the sea. I was pretty excited at our first glimpse of the lighthouse as we neared our destination.
As always, walking along the coast is breathtakingly beautiful although the path was not getting any easier. I must admit though, it was quite hot and I was more than ready to finish this hike and do a bit of swimming.
Livakadi Beach
Slowly we made our way along the path and suddenly, there was Livakadi Beach just below us, I have read it is one of the loveliest beaches on Folegandros and I believe that! We finished descending to the beach and found a spot under a tree where we spread out our towels and set up for the day. Then off we went to swim for awhile. The day was perfect for swimming, the water had just the right amount of chill to feel refreshing yet it wasn’t so cold that we felt chilled. It was truly an enjoyable and relaxing afternoon just swimming, hanging out and swimming again.
Aspropounta Lighthouse
I chose not to hike up to the Asporpounta Lighthouse and decided to take a nap under our little treed oasis instead. Steve hiked up the rocky cliff towards the lighthouse. He says it was a bit steep at first but then leveled off and crossed a few stone walls. The path was not as bad as he thought it would be and the views were awesome.
The Way Back
We returned back up the same way we came down. Even though it was late afternoon it was quite hot although not as hot as hiking in. Of course hiking up was rough, I was thankful that we brought lots of water, electrolytes, wore hats and rested at every little spot of shade we could find along the way. Once back at the hotel we had just enough time to clean up and head into town for dinner.
Conclusion
All in all, this was a really fun hike even with the heat. Folegandros is a beautiful island and we truly enjoyed our time here. It was a fantastic day. If you are ever in Folegandros, take the hike to Livadaki Beach, it is definitely worth it!
