While in the St Albans area of England, we stayed at Sopwell House our first two nights during our July 2025 trip. This lovely hotel is located in the countryside on the outskirts of St Albans. This family owned hotel is nothing short of lovely.
Location
About a 45 minute drive from the London Heathrow airport, St. Albans is a perfect place to visit. You can find Sopwell House on the outskirts of the town.
History of Sopwell House
Sopwell House dates back to 1603 when it was a private home for Richard Sadlier called New Barnes. Originally the Sopwell House was a one-story Tudor style home. Over time Sopwell House was the home to many British aristocrats including Prince Louis of Batenburg who utilized this as his countryside home.
First Impressions
As we drove up to Sopwell House, immediately I knew we would have a lovely stay. Picture perferct I could tell it was once a country manor, from the beautiful stone white walls to the meticulous hydrangeas surround the property, Sopwell House gave off vibes of serenity.
The Hotel Lobby and Halls
After checking in, we were escorted to our room through some really quirky, yet beautiful hallways. Each turn gave off an elegant, yet homey vibe.
Our Room
We stayed in a basic room which was anything but basic. Our home for the next two nights was comfortable, tastefully decorated and roomy. Our window looked out to the countryside.
The Garden
One of the areas that really sets the country manor tone for Sopwell House is the garden and lily pond. There is a comfortable patio overlooking the garden and pond. You will also walk through a nicely wooded area of the garden which is like walking under a canopy of trees. In addition, is a lovely gazebo and benches thoughtfully scattered throughout the garden. There is also an open aired brick walled off area for special events. All in all, we enjoyed wandering around the various areas of the garden each evening and in the mornings.
Breakfast
Breakfast each morning was a treat to wake up to. So many selections with healthy choices. The pressed coffee was especially delicious. Staff was able to readily answer my questions concerning food choices with my walnut allergy and make specific recommendations.
Spa
I did enjoy a massage while here and highly recommend the spa. It is a nice relaxing area and I left feeling fabulous.
Conclusion
Sopwell House is a perfect place to stay while visiting the St. Albans area. Both Steve and I enjoyed our stay here and felt like we were experiencing a splendid stay in the country. We found the English countryside to be very lovely and hope to explore more during our next trip to England.
