This short story is also set in Greece, “Making an Entrance in Santorini“. As with my other short stories this is from our travels. My short stories differ from my regular posts as they share some of our many mishaps and some of us just experiencing new places and new things. I hope you enjoy!
Steve and I do enjoy a ferry ride while in Greece. It is an inexpensive way to get from one island to another. The hustle and bustle while getting on is complimented by the mindless relaxing once aboard. While aboard I enjoy going outside and gazing at the tranquil blue of the Aegean Sea while feeling the occasional mist waft aboard. The small islands appear and disappear while I scan them to see which one I might want to visit next. I watch in amazement when pulling up to port seeing how quickly cars and people disembark and embark.
Last fall I was feeling pretty comfortable taking a ferry to and from various islands. This was our third trip to Greece and we had about half a dozen ferry trips under our belt so felt comfortable in knowing our way around and what to expect.
This particular day, we were traveling from Naxos to Santorini. It was a beautiful day with clear blue skies and a warm sun. Once close to Santorini, we went to grab our luggage and prepare for disembarking. Expertly the ferry pulled into the port. The ramp was lowered and passengers were on their way.
I grabbed my luggage, ready to go. Steve was still searching for his bag so, as to get out of the way, I got in line and decided to meet him on shore. With my luggage in tow, I confidently stepped onto the metal ramp. To my horror, within two steps, down I went with a thump! My feet slid out from under me and I flipped onto my back. Legs in the air, and thoroughly humiliated, I struggled to get upright. I was silently cursing myself for wearing my cute flat shoes instead of sneakers. Immediately at least four Greek gentleman jumped to my assistance and helped me up. Assuring I was ok, one gentleman pulled my bags and another escorted me down the plank. This type of courtesy I have experienced only in Greece! Red faced with embarrassment I kept repeating “efcharisto, thank you, efcharisto”.
Once my husband caught up with me I explained what had happen. Glad I was okay and knowing how ungraceful I am, he quipped, “it’s just like you to make a grand entrance to Santorini!”
