We were on our way to the Asheville, North Carolina and of course, we were looking for some hiking. We found Chimney Rock State Park to be the hiking we were looking for! Located only 25 miles south of Asheville, it was the perfect place to stop.
Chimney Rock State Park
Chimney Rock State Park has many different trails for hiking. We choose the iconic Chimney Rock Trail itself. The Rock itself is one large monolith protruding from the side of the hill and resembling a chimney. On top of this large rock, the US Flag is flying proudly.

Getting to the flag is no easy feat though, if you choose not to use the elevator. There are 420 steps to the top of Chimney Rock. You will pass some points of interest along the way such as, The Subway, Vista Rock, and The Cave.
Once on top, you can see across the gorge below. You can also see Lure Lake, which we had passed on they way in. It was a hot day. Regardless, with a few rest breaks, plenty of water, and determination, it was worth every step!
Hiking Hickory Nut Falls Trail
Hickory Nut Falls was our next hike. This hike is a 1.4 mile round trip, out and back trail. The trail is well maintained and actually a very pleasant, although short, hike. The falls themselves were quite beautiful. Standing at over 400 feet, the area was lush and tranquil. We were told by staff that this waterfall was featured in the movie, “The Last of the Mohicans”. Of course, now I am going to have to watch this show sooner or later just to spot the waterfall!
Conclusion
There are many other hiking opportunities at Chimney Rock State Park, which we would have enjoyed exploring. Unfortunately, it was over 90 F and quite muggy so we called it a day and headed to Asheville. This is really a great park and easily accessible for most people. I would visit here again if I was in the area.
